Back to School 2011-12

Well, we have officially ended week 2 of school for the new year!! And I haven't take ONE. SINGLE. PICTURE. :O Hmmm....I wonder what that means? I could speculate, but maybe I'll just try to do better! :)

Danny started 7th grade, and Tamara, 5th. They are absolutely loving MFW -Rome to the Reformation. We also have been doing Math and Spelling. I have some writing assignments brewing, but those won't be started till Sept.
We are getting ready to take a 10 day trip to visit my family in PA, so school will be put on hold. This is going to be "our vacation" even though it is later in the year!

So hopefully I'll be back with pics in a few weeks!

Happy schooling~

Baking~

Last Wednesday we had a little different school day. We were getting ready to spend the weekend with my sister in GA and the best part was that my parents were coming down from PA to spend the weekend there, too......the reason? My nephew was graduating from High School!! :)
I had agreed to bring lunch for everyone for Friday since my sister would be busy that day setting up for graduation.

Part of our lunch was going to be chocolate chip cookies!! :) I decided that was something the kids could make while I did other things. I did oversea a little since I heard one of them misread a measurement! 1 tsp. or 1 T. makes quite a difference when adding certain ingredients!! ;)

They both made one batch....the only difference, Danny's had M & M's and Tamara's had dark chocolate chips.

The yummiest chocolate chip recipe around!! :)

We also did Math bookwork in the afternoon. :) So they a good dose of math in for the day!

And we had a great weekend in GA along with some yummy choco. chip cookies that got eaten up! (Except for about 5)

Appetizing??

So last week in science we did an experiment! We wanted to see if we could grow germs!! :)

We filled 4 cups with warm water and beef bouillon cubes and then added other "ingredients".

From r. to l. ~ Water with vinegar, plain water, water with salt and water with milk. (this is the finished product)

Then we set them on the windowsill, it said for a week, but today was 5 days and they were looking pretty yucky, so we observed and dumped today!

This was the salt and the milk ones. I didn't think the one with salt was supposed to get nasty, but it had little spots of green mold growing over top. Maybe we didn't add enough salt??
The milk one was goopy and smelled bad! :P

Vinegar and plain ones. The Vinegar one looked the best and smelled of beef bouillon and vinegar. The plain one smelled like beef broth but had a nasty film over top!

Another interesting observation.....only the cup with vinegar cleaned out by just rinsing it with water. The rest left a film that had to be scrubbed off. :P

So, technically, the vinegar and salt should have kept germs from growing. We learned how God put just the right amount of salt in the oceans to keep them from getting disgusting.

We are really enjoying our science book right now, "Genesis for Kids" (science experiments that show God's power in Creation). There is commentary between two "doctors". Dr. Lenslo (a magnifying glass) is hilarious and comes up with stuff that makes us split our sides very often!! ;) Dr. Paige (a book) is down to earth and describes how things work in detail....and keeps Dr. Lenslo from getting too far off the path! :) The kids like when I use a "crazy voice" for Dr. Lenslo....kind of gives him character! :)

This week we started learning about the solar system. Dr. Paige was saying how we should watch for shooting stars and Dr. Lenslo interrupts and says, "Stars with guns?? Aaaahhhh!!" They also called the Milky Way, "Juice from Cows Avenue"

Another thing that struck Danny funny was when they said earth is like a freckle on a flea that is riding on a cow, compared to the whole universe!! :)

Anyway, just a little bit of what's going on in our science class. Tomorrow we start building the Tabernacle in History! :) Should be interesting!! Stay tuned......and goodnight! :)
